The male is Mars, the female is Venus, and in modern LGBTQ style, in between is Mercury. In symbols, males are ♂, females are ♀, and ☿. It was Swedish biologist and botanist Carl von Linné who began using this planetary symbol as a gender symbol in biology. He is the man behind the L in Cannabis sativa L., the botanical name for cannabis. Nevertheless, Linné, the “father of taxonomy,” named Cannabis sativa L. in his “Species Plantarum” of 1753. The “Linnaean Hierarchical Classification System” is the basis of the current taxonomy.
