The NPO Japan Hemp Association held the 1st World Hemp Environmental Forum KYOTO 2016 HEMP Lifeline to the Future on July 2, 2016, as a kick-off forum for the international network of hemp industry legends from 25 countries on 5 continents including Japan. It was a kick-off forum held as a networking event. The event was modeled on the International Hemp Environmental Forum (IHEF), an Internet-based global hemp exchange site run by Takashi Okanuma, then President of the Japan Hemp Association. The first World Hemp Environmental Forum was held to provide a forum for people to meet and discuss the theme of “Can hemp contribute to solving the world’s environmental problems? The forum was held at the Kyoto International Conference Center, where the Kyoto Protocol was adopted at the Global Warming Prevention Conference, under the theme of “Creating a Sustainable Future. Despite being a marijuana event, the event was subsidized by the Seven-Eleven Memorial Foundation and supported by Kyoto City, and the participation of then Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa, Yasuhiro Tanaka, the chief priest of Kamigamo Betsurai-jinja Shrine in Kyoto, and then Prime Minister Akie Abe’s wife was a topic of conversation. Akie Abe, then Prime Minister’s wife, commented, “This is an era in which we must look at what is essentially important, which is to regain our ability to feel humanly along with the economy. I would like to see the lifting of the ban on the use of hemp as a medical treatment, as hemp is important as a traditional culture and is effective in treating various diseases. This event will be the beginning of a marijuana revival in Japan. This event will lead to the second event to be held six years later in 2022 at the Queen Sirikid Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand, where the ban on hemp has been lifted, and together with the first Asia Hemp Expo held at the same time, it will lead to the future of the world.
